South Africa 2009

Paul O'Connell captained the 2009 tour to South Africa with Ian McGeechan leading a coaching team including Warren Gatland, Shaun Edwards and Rob Howley.

The Lions performed well in their provincial matches winning six and drawing one but lost the series overall due to a 2-1 defeat in their test matches against South Africa.

Their defeats occurred in Durban and Pretoria, the second only due to a last minute penalty by Morne Steyn from his own half.

The final test in Johannesburg was won confidently however 28-9 to the Lions.
